Local-First and Zero-Cloud: Why We Shipped Orkely Without a Subscription

Why does a freelancer or small studio need an ongoing $40/month cloud subscription just to track hourly tasks, log client contacts, and generate invoices?

Over the past decade, software has migrated en masse to the cloud. While cloud collaboration is essential for distributed enterprises, for millions of independent professionals it introduced fragile dependencies: mandatory monthly bills, internet requirements to view client data, and constant anxiety over third-party data breaches.

When we built Orkely—our flagship native Windows application now active in the Microsoft Store—we took the opposite approach: Local-First, Zero-Cloud, and Zero-Subscription.

1. The Single Local SQLite Architecture

In Orkely, your entire business database resides in a single .sqlite file stored locally on your machine:

  • Instant Cold Starts: Queries execute in microseconds against local NVMe storage without round-trip network latency.
  • Air-Gapped Privacy: Nothing is uploaded to external telemetry or third-party servers. Your client rates and proposals remain strictly on your drive.
  • Trivial Backups: Backing up your entire business is as simple as copying one file to an external hard drive or private cloud folder.

2. NativePHP + Electron: Modern Web Stack on the Desktop

Orkely is engineered using Laravel 12, Livewire Volt, and Tailwind CSS, packaged inside a NativePHP desktop runtime with an embedded PHP binary and Electron shell.

This allowed us to ship 8 integrated modules—Clients, Projects, Tasks, Time Logs, Invoicing, Expenses, Files, and Proposals—with smooth client-side PDF compilation via DomPDF. Invoices are generated directly from tracked tasks and rendered to crisp, print-standard PDFs locally.

3. Shipped and Verified in the Microsoft Store

We packaged and code-signed the application for official Microsoft Store certification. It proves that independent studios can ship robust, enterprise-grade software products end-to-end without massive teams.
