Twenty Years of Ink and Code: The Philosophy Behind Criss Design

From commercial prepress in 2006 to shipping native desktop apps and automation engines in 2026. How two decades of physical print discipline shaped the way we build modern software.

Twenty Years of Ink and Code: The Philosophy Behind Criss Design

When you send a 160-page financial publication or a die-cut presentation folder to a commercial web offset press, there is no "undo" button. If an image is 150 DPI instead of 300, if an ink density exceeds 320% TAC, or if a spot color knocks out text it was supposed to overprint, thousands of euros and weeks of client deadlines evaporate.

That is the world Criss Design was born into back in 2006. Over twenty years of continuous operation, that unforgiving discipline—where every single millimeter, color separation, and typographic baseline has to be verified before commit—has become the core DNA of everything we do. And curiously, it turned out to be the greatest competitive advantage when building modern software.

1. The Physical Discipline of Print Production

Long before modern reactive frameworks, Git branches, or cloud CDNs, commercial prepress required absolute foresight. A freelance production specialist had to anticipate physical realities:

  • Dot Gain & Paper Stock: How ink behaves when absorbed by uncoated woodfree vs. double-coated gloss art paper.
  • Trapping & Registration: Preventing hairline white gaps when high-speed print cylinders misalign by a fraction of a millimeter.
  • Structural Die-Cutting: Engineering pocket folders and packaging with precise folding tolerances and glue flaps that assemble effortlessly.
  • Multi-Language Cascades: Setting up master InDesign styles so German copy (which expands 30% over English) flows without orphan lines or broken column grids.
“Going to press without queries isn't a marketing slogan. It is a contractual promise that the printer receives a clean, flight-checked PDF/X file that rips without pausing their press run.”

2. Bridging the Gap: From Prepress to Modern Software

As the digital world evolved, we noticed a strange paradox in software engineering: while tooling got faster, interfaces got flimsier. Web applications bloated with megabytes of unneeded JavaScript, layouts shifted during page loads, and basic typography looked sloppy.

We brought prepress rigor into code. When we develop software—whether it's our own native desktop app Orkely (shipped directly to the Microsoft Store), multi-page platforms like Carviano and MyPetsStories, or automated content engines—we apply the same exact principles:

Zero Layout Shift

Fixed typography and exact bounding geometry prevent jumping elements, just like a locked-down editorial grid.

Local-First Speed

Fast cold starts, single-file SQLite storage, and zero unnecessary cloud dependencies so things run instantly offline.

3. Who We Work With

Over the past 20 years, we have served clients across Switzerland, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Romania:

  • Private Wealth & Investment Firms needing restrained, high-touch presentation brochures that live on a boardroom desk.
  • Commercial Real Estate & Prepress (like Zochwell Group in Singapore) building multi-year identity collateral and investor prospectuses.
  • Industrial Manufacturers (like RK Valve) needing dense technical catalogues where thousands of pressure ratings and pipe dimensions stay rock solid across reprints.
  • Founders & Product Teams needing end-to-end design, UI/UX, and shipped software without the sluggish overhead of traditional design agencies.

4. The Way Forward

Whether it is paper coming off an offset press or compiled software running on a Windows PC, our ethos remains unchanged: honest craftsmanship, transparent pricing, and direct communication without account managers in the middle.
